Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about fashion, sustainable and ecological fashion specifically, and how it can sometimes be portrayed as dull and lacking color, as if we should be wearing beige dresses to help the planet regenerate itself and leave behind all of the colors of the rainbow.
I’m here to debunk this myth!
A world without color makes me sad ( and depressed!) The truth is that Mother Nature offers us a spectacular range of colors through magnificent flower gardens and forests, sunsets, coral reefs, wildlife and so much more.
I believe that we can love fashion and still care. It involves doing a bit of research. It involves rejecting fast fashion outlets and taking the time to read labels or sifting through racks of second hand finds. I promise you that there are lots of wonderful treasures out there. It requires less impulse spending at the mall and more hunting for treasures.
As an example, I recently found the most spectacular Mexican skirt in the most gorgeous colors at a local thrift store. It was from a Mexican designer and it had clearly never been worn. The skirt made my heart sing. And no need to travel abroad to find it!
Another example is my coming across a gorgeously curated selection of eco-dresses on the Omi-Na-Na platform by scrolling through my LinkedIn account. Ooooh, it was love at first sight! As well as working with ethical and sustainable businesses, Omi-Na-Na is committed to playing its part in being as eco-friendly as possible. For example, you’ll find that they regularly update their collection made from designers that champion local artisans and manufacturing through traditional techniques, and they only make small quantities available to help manage their waste footprint and to allow for more sustainable production.
Here re some Omi-Na-Na finds that I simply adore:
The designers they have chosen to work with champion local artisans and manufacturing through traditional techniques, and many even produce their own fabrics in their studios. The small supply chains involved in bringing their beautiful designs to life, mean greater transparency and control on key aspects such as producing ethically and craftsmanship. The combination of high quality fabrics, unique designs that transcend seasonal trends and limited production runs, creates exclusive and memorable pieces that can be worn for years to come.
Omi-Na-Na offers products made with hemp, natural dyes and block-printing. I’m already a major fan! For more information about the platform: click here.
